Faithless

In 1977 divorced director David leaves his family in London and visits his friend Markus and family in Stockholm, then spends time with them in their summer house. The attraction between him and Markus's wife Marianne is palpable.

Present: The aging David visits Marianne who has been hospitalized in a psychiatric ward. In 1977, David brings his two sons with him to Stockholm. He offers Marianne the lead role in his new film Susanna.

1978: Working on their erotic film, David and Marianne grow closer. Marianne's daughter Isabelle is excluded from the first screening but watches secretly. Present: David and Marianne find that both are estranged from their children.

Present. Marianne disappears. In his search David visits the grown-up Isabelle. 1978. Marianne's mood is lifted when their film is received well. With David she attends the film festival in Bratislava where they clash in a confrontation.

After a film festival incident, David and Marianne grow distant. When he directs at her theater, they reconnect and meet secretly. At a birthday party, their attraction is obvious, leading to consequences.

1980. Marianne and Markus are divorcing and he claims custody of Isabelle. A nighttime meeting between them doesn't ease the situation. Present. David is shaken when he hears Marianne's version of their shared history.
